Cab Ride: North Metro Model Rairoad Club: Minneapolis to Duluth
An engineer's view of the layout from May 2, 2020.
This ride covers the main portion of the track, with a ride from Minneapolis through Staples, MN then on to Duluth. There are additional branches in various levels of completeness on the layout.
The North Metro Model Railroad club is a private club in Coon Rapids, MN. The layout is built and privately funded by club members and donations from other modelers. The leased space is just over 5000 sq ft in size, in the basement below some commercial properties.
The club has been building the layout for over 6 years. The layout is built to be operational, with trains that pick up and drop cars at destinations based on a car card and waybill system. Since the club has detailed substantial parts of the layout that aren't visible from the engineer's perspective, we've added snapshots to show the side view that visitors get.
While the club is private, there are two public events per year for visitors, and private visits can be arranged. The best contact is via the facebook page at nmmrc

The 2018 Free-mo layout at Trains at Christmas had 55 modules and about 250 feet of mainline. Thanks to the Sioux Falls Model Engineers Society for the space they give us every year! Recorded on a Replay Prime X on an Intermountain flat car. Engines pushing are a Proto 2000 PA/PB set with Tsunami sound.

Recorded before tear-down on May 7. If you don't enjoy some bell and horn exercise, this probably isn't your video. The engineer seemed to be making a point about noise.

The guys from Waupaca gave the camera a push while set up in Menomonie. Their folded figure 8 layout is really beautifully detailed and prototypical of central Wisconsin.

3 run bys: UP Big Boy pulling coal, a pair of Southern GP30s pulling box cars (with the hand of god powering the caboose), and UP Centennial pulling box cars. The viaduct is a free-mo module modeled on the real one in Grove City, PA on the B&LE railroad. Video from the Happy Grandparents Train Show in Menomonie WI, April 2015.

I love trains and I live right next to train tracks of the BNSF in Galesburg Illinois
Still open to new members? Coon Rapids family, when is the next open house? Nice video.

Piss test at 1:00 !!! Even Tootles knows not to run a red flag ( and stop sign to boot )
Very nice and impressive. I'm an old timer train layout builder and it would be nice to live near you folks as I would love to offer my time and former knowledge in helping you finish the immense amount of work you have left . Maybe in another life. I'm very impressed with what I see and good luck. Jim, Hatboro, PA
Looks great run very well glad you got to the show thanks for the video
Mal sonido
Like The Layout
Una magnifica realizzazione. Curve quasi tutte ampie come nei veri tracciati ferroviari; scambi "lunghi", adatti a me medie velocità; binari posati con precisione; cura dei particolari. Avrei evitato l'incrocio privo di scambio.
I like model train cab rides, the only thing is, the people walking around, that takes away the realism. It looks like a bunch of giants walking and looking around. Maybe a cab ride should be done at non exhibit times, no people. Just something to think about for your next video
Los felicito, porqué en otros videos, al paso de una avenida o carretera no tocan el claxon o la campana para avisar, y eso es lo qué pasa en la realidad, saludos desde Guadalajara, Jalisco
The bascule bridge is Anita fact also super nice video
I like how you can hear the train orders and the dispatcher in the video, corresponding to the signals
Hi. Very good video.
Wow, that was awesome! Thanks for sharing 👍
Awesome
Excellent!
It's really a beautiful impressive layout-- the scenery is terrific but the pop-up track maps are silly.
Any videos of the Norfolk southern coal train?
Lots of incredible sweeping and lengthy curves. Some great rock cuts and cool viaducts and bridges the train passes under. I modeled Texas in N-scale, so not many tunnels, and viaducts replaced tunnels as means of breaking up the scenes. Train runs at a nice clip once it gets to the main and it's straightaways. I subscribed tonight.
Unbelievable layout. Wow
Most beutifull layout there is!!!
As a plumber, I approve this layout and the over head plumbing starting at 5:08
Exquisite track laying
WONDERFUL!!!
The model railroad companies don't think about modelers who are deaf. I only do dc with no sound.
amazing!
an excellent journey. thank you
Aku suka
I've been trying to get in there to do a Cab Ride video for my UA-cam Channel, but they won't let me in. What kind of Camera are you using? The clarity is stunning!
8:03 It's that no-good mischievous VW Bus!
WOW VERY VERY COOL
Beyond great
1:40 *Lion and Lady playing Hide n Seek*
7:48 - Is that a cloud in the sky? Nice touch if it is.
Great video. Lots of neat stuff to see, but I have to ask, was part of the video repeated?
Outstanding layout! I enjoyed the cab ride, thanks for sharing!
WOW.
Your train was awful slow, so I put the settings to double speed as I went around. You had some great scenery. Kudos!
that is scale speed
Very well done, great details.
2:04 a giant monster rampages through the valley. 2020 (colorized)
"STOP" sign ignored at 0:53. Ended up blocking the diagonal crossing track when stopped by dwarf signal on other side. Engineer doesn't know the territory.
Great Layout!
Great massive layout. Amazing! Greetings from the Train Lord in South Australia and the Adelaide Model Railway Club. Please subscribe also.
Some of those module names sounded familiar! I see Minnesota Freemo WAS there! I have great memories of diving my module to the Worlds Greatest Hobby show about 15 years sgo.
I like the transfer table and engine shops, very nicely done. It will truly be awesome when finished!!
Is the 1.6 scale live steam DM&IR articulated still at the depot? We are thinking of taking another road trip next year and it would be worth while to go to Duluth to see that model again. We grew up in MN back in the 40s-50s and my wife and I still model the Soo Line and Great Northern on our O scale layout here in KY. Excellent video and a fantastic camera you have.
Excellent modular sectional layout. It does remind me of when my wife and I traveled with our Soo Line sectional layout. Are any of the structures on this layout from the John Proebsting estate? He had a marvelous layout up near Woodstock many years ago with the Waupaca depot scratch built along the line along with some other structures. John's buildings were absolutely magnificent, his roundhouse and surrounding area was to scale of what existed back in the late steam era.
fantastic layout and ride, shame about the character with the yellow/black hat
The guy running the train?
spoils the effect if you don't mind me saying, distracting.
Looks very promising, you do the small details like lakes, bridges, and scratch made wooden crossings fantastic.
